The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson

Jenna Fox has just awoken from a coma, a coma she’s been in for a year. She has been told that there was a terrible accident and that she has been moved from her home in Boston to California to recover. She doesn’t remember anything of her life and is told that things will come back to her. However Jenna just feels like something is off. Her grandma doesn’t treat her like a grandma should. Jenna walks differently than she remembers and her fingers don’t fit together like they should. Jenna slowly starts to recover her memory and begins to realize that things aren't right. At school Jenna befriends Ethan and Allys, both struggle with issues mental and physical. When Allys finds Jenna’s secret she threatens to turn Jenna in but an illness might just save Jenna and Allys’s life.

This book deals with a lot of interesting issues such as government controlled medical systems, advances in science, issues of morality and the soul.  This book brings many good discussion questions to light and would be a great book used for an ethics class. There is much strength in the book such as the suspense, the readers must read on to find out why Jenna’s parents did what they did and how she will deal with it. This book will appeal to any teen that likes science fiction and questions the unknown. I enjoyed this book. I thought it brought up many ethically based questions. I like how the author brings the reader through Jenna’s discoveries. The tone of the book is somber and adds to the book itself. The characters are well developed but I wish more was told about Dane and his issues. That was kind of left hanging. I think this book has a broad appeal with teens and would make a great discussion book on issues of medical agencies, bio-ethics, and morality.
